Caffeine Consumption during Pregnancy

For
a long time, caffeine consumption during pregnancy has been a polemical topic
and has even been associated to spontaneous abortion, especially in women who
present excessive nauseas during the first three months. However, it has been
proved that the relationship between risk-caffeine-pregnancy is based on the
consumed quantity. This is why; the recommended daily caffeine consumption for
pregnant women is of not more than 300 mg (Not more than 3 cups). Excessive
caffeine consumption might end up in difficulties for the baby to absorb iron.
Caffeine is transported to the fetus through the placenta and probably the main problem
is that during this period, women have more trouble processing these kinds of
substances, reason why they travel in higher quantities to the baby’s blood.
This might shorten gestation period or produce low weight in the new born.
For
all these reasons, experts recommend pregnant women not to completely eliminate
caffeine from their diets, but to decrease their consumption levels, especially
because caffeine might not only be found in coffee but in other products such
as: Coffee, tea, soda, etc…
